Most
important:
The most important thing of all when
learning how to house train a puppy is to accept the fact
that puppies are like babies, they don’t know what is right
and what is wrong, whether they can urinate or poop on
your carpet or not, and you will also need to accept the
fact that while training your puppy there will be some
accidents along the way where the puppy will simply relieve
itself inside the house because they do not yet have full
control over their bowel and bladders and it is your
responsibility to clean up the puppies mess without
punishing them. Keep in mind that with proper nurture and
training the puppy will grow into a well trained dog and
have full control over its bowel and bladder but for
the mean time you just have to deal with
it.
First things first, make sure you take
your puppy to the vet to get a full health check to make
sure that your puppy is in a healthy state because if
the puppy has any diseases or infections this could
complicate and delay the house training
process.
Things you will need when you learn how to
house train a
puppy:
- A nominated
area for the puppy to sleep
Schedules:
I believe that having a schedule is a
vital part of any puppy training program, and I strongly
recommend you make a schedule for when your puppy will
sleep, wake up, eat, etc. Not only will this help the puppy
learn when it is meant to do these things is will also help
you in predicting the times when the puppy will need to
eliminate, usually they need to go after they wake up from a
nap or long sleep, after they eat, or after a play
session.
Training:
It is best to start off slowly with the
puppy and get it to familiarize itself with each of the
rooms in your house and it is important for you to always
keep an eye out on the puppy at first to keep it out of any
unwanted accidents. Have a small room or blocked off area
which will be used as the puppies bed. Line this up with
paper or newspapers. When learning how to house train a
puppy many people like to use crates as the sleeping spot
for puppies as dogs don’t like to soil the area in which
they sleep and therefore this helps train the puppy to hold
it in for longer.
When training the puppy where to urinate
or defecate pick a designated spot outside and always put
the puppy on a leash and take it to the same spot. As soon
as the puppy finishes eliminating praise it by giving it a
treat or patting it, any way you like to show them you are
pleased. If you ever catch the puppy in the act pooping or
urinating inside the house DO NOT punish or yell at them,
simply take them outside to the designated area and if they
finish off there praise them and show them you are pleased
and soon the puppy will grow to realise that is the area
they are meant to eliminate at. Make sure you clean up the
mess inside the house and using deodorisers to get rid of
the smell because dogs usually eliminate where they can
smell there scent from a previous urination or
defecation.
In the beginning learning how to house
train a puppy might be a bit challenging but as you progress
and stay consistent with your schedule the puppy will learn
what they should do to and where they should go to relieve
themselves to please you, so with persistence and patience
you will have learnt how to house train a puppy that is well
behaved and full of life.
