How To Stop Puppies
Biting
It is common for puppies to bite and nip
on things and is actually necessary as they go through
teething. If you learn how to stop puppies
biting things at an early stage then biting won’t
become a problem as they grow older.
Like any other training method you should
stick to one proven method and be consistent with it and
making sure that the rest of the family follows the same
training techniques.

Many owners aren’t aware that they are
actually encouraging their puppies to bite and nip at things
and this behaviour becomes something that the puppy
thinks is good to do and if not dealt with at an early age
it can lead onto bigger problems as the dog gets older and
can cause serious harm if they bite
someone.
Playing tug-o-war and wrestling with your
dog, letting your dog bite or take nips at your hand and
fingers all actually encourage your puppy to think that
biting is playing and should be done and even worse could
develop into dog aggression. If you are serious about
learning how to stop puppies biting you and other people
then I don’t recommend you do these things with your puppy
as it will encourage bad behaviour.
Here are a few tips and tricks that will
help you learn how to stop puppies biting:
- As soon as the puppy bites you,
firmly say “NO” and take your hand or finger away and
give the puppy a toy that it can chew on
instead.
- Have a can with some rocks or coins
or anything with a loud noise when shaken and each time
the puppy takes a bite or nip at you, shake the can and
say “NO”, the loud clanging noises from the can makes
the puppy feel uncomfortable and will learn that if it
bites you there will be a irritable noise that comes
along with it so your puppy will learn to stop
biting.
- My personal favourite method is to
make it seem like the puppy is hurting you when they
bite or nip your hand, fingers, heels, or anywhere
else. This is quite an effective method when trying to
learn how to stop puppies biting. If the puppy bites
you make a loud “OUCH” or yelping sound, then stop
playing with the puppy and ignore it for a little
while. With consistency the puppy will learn that if it
bites you then you won’t play with it anymore and hence
will stop biting you in the
future.
Never physically punish your puppy by
hitting it, some puppies will interpret this as a game and
will try to bite you even more while some others will be
afraid of you and this can cause much more problems,
especially if you’re in the process of training your
puppy.
Whenever the puppy plays with you and
licks you without using its teeth to bite or nip then praise
it to show that you are pleased with its good behaviour and
if your puppy begins to bite again then continue using your
chosen method to stop the biting and show the puppy that you
are not pleased with its biting.
Learning how to stop puppies biting and
implementing the method you have learnt is not a very
difficult task and anybody can teach their puppy or even
older dog to stop biting as long as they are consistent with
their training and use the right
techniques.
