Before learning how to teach a dog tricks
you will need to several basic skills that will make
teaching your dog tricks a lot more trouble-free. You should
teach your dog the basic commands such as sit, stay, come,
down, and heel. Once your dog has learnt how to perform
these basic skills on command then you are ready to teach
your dog other tricks.
Some things you may need when learning how
to teach a dog tricks are:
- Small treats
- Collar
- Leash
You should keep training sessions for
teaching tricks short, try to keep it down to around 15-20
minutes tops each session and practice regularly each and
every day. By keeping things short your dog won’t get bored
and tired of repeating the same trick over and over again.
Make sure you reward your dog each time a trick is performed
correctly and keep the sessions positive.
Choose a command name for each trick and
always use the same command when teaching your dog tricks.
Repeat the same action a few times and keep everything
consistent. As your dog learns a trick and is in the process
of solidifying the learnt behaviour, slowly decrease the
reward. For example in the beginning you would want to use
treats to teach your dog a trick and then slowly replace
treats with just praise and then replacing praise with just
verbal praises like “good boy”. This is great when you learn
how to teach a dog tricks because it won’t lead your dog on
to learn that it should always expect treats after it has
performed a trick and understand that just by performing a
trick it has pleased you and that is
enough.
Most likely the first few attempts your
dog might not get things right but it is your responsibility
to keep calm and not get frustrated and keep trying. Sooner
or later your dog will get it right and make you proud. Your
dog doesn’t want to disappoint you but to only please you,
so you should remember this when you are learning how to
teach a dog tricks. If you get angry and scold your dog,
this will only have negative consequences in the future when
you are trying to teach your dog new
tricks.
Another great training tool that many
people use when learning how to teach a dog tricks is called
a clicker. A clicker can be purchased at any pet store and
has been proven to be very effective when training dogs how
to perform tricks. Dogs interpret information by using their
sense of smell and hearing so this is why clicker training
has been proven to be so useful.
The most important aspect in all of dog
