Some puppies learn at a young age that
when they whine they usually get what they want – we play
with them or reward them to stop them from whining and what
this does is it encourages your puppy to always whine when
it wants something.
To stop puppy whining you need to know why
your puppy is whining. Listed below are they most common
reasons why puppies whine:
- Attention seeking (Most common
reason) –
Your puppy might be bored or lonely and wants you to
play with them and finds that whining will get your
attention.
- Needs to go to the toilet
– Your puppy
may need to relieve itself or has accidentally already
done so in its sleeping area
- New environment
– It is
very common for puppies to be whining in the early
stages of crate training because it is not used to its
temporary confinement yet.
- Uncomfortable
- Puppies
will sometimes whine when they are hungry, thirsty,
cold, hot, wet, or in pain.
- Separation anxiety
– Having
nobody around can make a puppy feel very lonely and
distressed.
There are many different methods to stop
puppy whining and you should remember to keep things
positive and be consistent with the way you go about trying
to stop puppy whining.
Attention
seeking:
If your dog is whining on purpose to get
your attention you shouldn’t play with your puppy or praise
it, this will only encourage more whining! What you can do
to stop puppy whining is to just simply ignore your puppy no
matter how long it takes until the whining stops. When your
puppy realizes that whining to get your attention doesn’t
work anymore it will usually stop. When your puppy stops
whining you can play with it and praise it to show that
reward comes when the puppy is quiet.
Needs to go to the
toilet:
If your puppy needs to go to the toilet
and whines to get you to let it out, then the answer is
pretty obvious. If you find that your puppy has soiled its
sleeping area, just calmly clean up the mess and get rid of
the smell with a deodorizer.
New
environment:
When starting out with crate training and
your puppy whines you should try to make the crate as
comfortable as possible, provide plenty of fresh water, lots
of fun toys to keep your puppy entertained and slowly your
puppy will get used to the crate and learn to love it as its
own special place.
Uncomfortable:
If your puppy is whining due to being
uncomfortable try to figure out why it is uncomfortable and
then act accordingly and this should stop your puppy from
whining. If your puppy is in pain then a trip to the vet
should be your first priority.
Separation
Anxiety:
Separation anxiety can be difficult to
deal with if you have no one at home to look after the puppy
while you are out. What you can do is to crate train your
puppy or slowly extend the period of time you are away from
your puppy each day. There are 2 great tricks that I know of
that has seemed to work wonders for myself and many other
people when trying to stop puppy whining - you can leave an
item of clothing with your scent in your puppies sleeping
area or wrap a ticking clock in a towel or rag or anything
soft and leave it in the puppies sleeping area. These 2
tricks work great because it provides the puppy with comfort
and it is said that the ticking clock trick replicates the
sound of another dog’s heartbeat.
If you are still unsure of why your puppy
is whining and believe that it is just whining to annoy you
then you can try using a whistle or a high-pitched noise
device to stop puppy whining. When your dog whines, blow
your whistle or make a loud noise from the device and your
dog will soon find this sound very unpleasant and will
associate whining with the unpleasant sounds and will tend
to stop whining. Don’t worry because the loud sounds does
not hurt your dog, it just simply gives an unpleasant sound
which your dog won’t like very much which is why this method
has been said to work quickly when trying to stop puppy
whining.
